Amyris Biotechnologies combines break-through technology and unique insights in the transportation fuels sector to bring environmentally friendly fuels to market. Amyris is leveraging its technology platform, which was developed as part of an earlier project to reduce costs to produce artemisinin-based anti-malarial drugs, to provide a cost-competitive bio-gasoline, a bio-diesel, and a bio-jet solution that works in current engines and distribution infrastructure without compromising fuel performance. All Amyris biofuels are designed to provide consumers and end users uncompromising alternatives to petroleum-based fuels.

Job Description:

We are seeking a scientist to lead a team of research associates to develop analytical methods which support the work of molecular biologists, chemists, and fermentation scientists. The successful candidate will develop quantitative small molecule assays using gas and liquid chromatography platforms, which will be transferred to the analytical operations department or our manufacturing sites. The successful candidate will work as part of cross-functional teams, interacting closely with staff in molecular biology, fermentation, and chemistry/engineering.


Responsibilities:

  • Develop methods for small molecule characterization/quantification.
  • Use in-house analytical equipment (GC, GC-MS, LC, LC-MS, ICP-MS, etc.) to aid in the analysis of various analytes from fermentation broths and chemistry reaction mixtures.
  • Lead a small team of research associates to accomplish the above tasks.
  • Prepare laboratory notebooks, technical reports, and SOP’s covering research.
  • Keep abreast of current scientific literature.
  • Prepare technical reports, summaries, protocols and quantitative analyses.
  • Present work at internal and external meetings.
  • Perform routine maintenance on analytical instrumentation.


Requirements:

  • Ph.D. degree in analytical chemistry or related discipline. Experience in small molecule characterization/quantification is required.
  • Experience using gas chromatography, liquid chromatography, and mass spectrometry for small molecule identification/quantification, is preferred.
  • Experience in team leadership is required.
  • Knowledgeable in the maintenance of analytical instrumentation.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and multi-tasking skills.
  • Requires good teamwork, communication and data handling skills.
  • Energetic, highly self-motivated and able to work efficiently and productively in a rapidly-growing company.
  • Proficiency in writing and oral presentations.
