Amyris Biotechnologies combines break-through technology and unique insights in the transportation fuels sector to bring environmentally friendly fuels to market. Amyris is leveraging its technology platform, which was developed as part of an earlier project to reduce costs to produce artemisinin-based anti-malarial drugs, to provide a cost-competitive bio-gasoline, a bio-diesel, and a bio-jet solution that works in current engines and distribution infrastructure without compromising fuel performance. All Amyris biofuels are designed to provide consumers and end users uncompromising alternatives to petroleum-based fuels.

Job Description

Candidates for this position will have an advanced degree in microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, biochemical engineering, or a related field. They should have a background in metabolic engineering, microbial physiology, and molecular genetics, and a proven record of research innovation. The successful candidate will take part in pathway engineering of microbes for the industrial production of second-generation biofuels. The job requires a comprehensive understanding of microbial metabolism and its regulation, as well as expertise in recombinant DNA technologies. Industrial or post-doctoral experience a plus.


Responsibilities

  • Design and implement experiments to modify microbial metabolism for highly productive strains.
  • Develop and implement assays and criteria for characterizing modified micro-organisms
  • Supervise experiments carried out by research associates.
  • Interpret complex data sets and propose research based on insight
  • Prepare technical reports, summaries, protocols, and quantitative analyses.


Prerequisites

  • Advanced degree (Ph.D preferred) in Biochemistry, Microbiology, Genetics, Biochemical Engineering, or a similar field.
  • Track record of performance to meet goals and milestones according to timeline
  • Experience with yeast metabolism
  • microbial molecular genetics.
  • Highly-motivated, creative researcher capable of critical thinking and problem-solving.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently design, execute, troubleshoot and interpret experiments.
  • Good communications skills; able to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Sound organizational skills.
  • Computer proficiency, including research-relevant software.


Experience with the following desired:

  • Experience in an industrial setting
  • Experience working in a team and managing workgroups
  • Anaerobic physiology of bacteria or yeast.
  • Metabolomics and metabolic modeling.
  • Advanced microbial fermentation.
