John MeloPresident & CEOJohn Melo has more than 20 years of combined experience as a business leader and expert in the global fuels industry. As President and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Melo has led Amyris through successful technology development, commercial start up and a series of funding rounds, including the initial public offering in the fall of 2010. Before joining Amyris in 2007, Mr. Melo served in various senior management positions at BP Plc (formerly British Petroleum) most recently as President of U.S. fuels operations where he successfully led programs to increase marketing volumes, reduce costs, and significantly improve financial returns. During his tenure at BP, Mr. Melo also served as Chief Information Officer of the refining and marketing segment; Senior Advisor for e-business strategy to Lord Browne, BP group chief executive; and Director of global brand development. In this last role, he helped develop the “Helios” re-branding effort. Before joining BP, Mr. Melo was with Ernst & Young and a member of the management teams for several startup companies, including Computer Aided Services and Alldata Corporation. Mr. Melo currently serves on the board of directors of U.S. Venture, Inc. and Renmatix Inc., and also serves as Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Bay Area Biosciences Association (BayBio). Mr. Melo is an appointed member to the U.S. section of the U.S.-Brazil CEO Forum.
Jim AldermanVice President, FuelsJim Alderman is responsible for coordinating sales of renewable fuels in the United States. Mr. Alderman has over thirty years of oil industry experience, specializing in petroleum supply chain activities including operations, product trading, and sales & marketing of petroleum fuels. Prior to joining Amyris, he worked for ten years at British Petroleum, most recently as a Regional Vice President, Southeast in their Fuels Business Unit. His prior experience includes senior positions with Tosco Corporation and Coastal States Refining Company. Mr. Alderman attended College of the Mainland (Texas City, TX) and is a veteran of the US Navy. Peter BoyntonChief Commercial OfficerPeter Boynton leads Amyris business development activities. Mr. Boynton joined Amyris in December 2009 after a successful career at Tate & Lyle and Cargill. Most recently before joining Amyris, Mr. Boynton held the position of Senior Vice President, Bio-Products and Fermentation at Tate & Lyle, responsible for the continued development of a biomaterials platform. Prior to that, he served as Vice President and General Manager of the global Tate & Lyle citric acid business. Before joining Tate & Lyle, Mr. Boynton was employed by Cargill, Inc., for nearly 18 years. He previously served on numerous boards, including DuPont/Tate & Lyle BioProducts LLC, Mexama, IBIO, and the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO). He received his B.S. in Economics from the University of Georgia.
Joel Cherry, Ph.D.President, Research & DevelopmentJoel Cherry leads Amyris research and development, including various ongoing collaborations. Prior to joining Amyris in November 2008, Dr. Cherry was Senior Director of bioenergy biotechnology at Novozymes. During his tenure at Novozymes, he was a member of the R&D management team specializing in protein engineering and directed evolution technologies. He was also principal investigator and director of the BioEnergy Project, an effort funded by the U.S. Department of Energy to reduce the cost of enzymes used in converting biomass to sugar. This work was awarded an R&D 100 Award, Scientific American Top 50 Award, and a Frost & Sullivan Emerging Technology Award. Dr. Cherry is an inventor on more than 20 issued patents, author of three book chapters and more than 30 scientific publications, and an invited speaker at numerous international conferences on biofuels. He received his B.A. from Carleton College in chemistry and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of New Hampshire.
Paulo DinizCEO, Amyris BrasilPaulo Diniz leads Amyris operations in Brazil. Prior to joining Amyris in March 2011, Mr. Diniz served as Chief Financial Officer of Bunge Brasil S.A., a wholly owned subsidiary of Bunge Ltd., an agribusiness and food company, from April 2009 to November 2010. From 2003 to April 2009, Mr. Diniz was Chief Financial Officer and a member of the board of directors of Cosan S.A., a renewable energy company. He received a Master of Business Administration degree from International Institute for Management Development (IMD) in Switzerland, a B. of Sc. degree in Production Engineering from the University of São Paulo (USP) in Brazil, and did post graduate work in human resources at INSEAD in France.
Gary LoebSenior Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate SecretaryGary Loeb joined Amyris in 2011 as Senior Corporate and Regulatory Counsel and became General Counsel and Corporate Secretary in May 2012. Previously, Mr. Loeb was Vice President of Intellectual Property at Genentech, Inc., where he most recently served as the senior-most attorney under General Counsel, overseeing a team of more than 90 employees, including 30 attorneys, and serving as Chief Litigation and Intellectual Property Officer among other positions with the company. Prior to joining Genentech in 2000, Mr. Loeb practiced general intellectual property law in Los Angeles and San Francisco. Mr. Loeb holds a J.D. from the Columbia Law School and B.S. on Biological Sciences from Stanford University. Mr. Loeb is also an Adjunct Professor at the University of San Francisco School of Law, where he lectures on biotechnology law.
Steven R. MillsChief Financial OfficerSteven Mills has more than 34 years of experience in the fields of accounting, corporate finance, strategic planning and mergers and acquisitions. Prior to joining Amyris in May 2012, Mr. Mills served as Senior Executive Vice President of Performance & Growth at Archer-Daniels-Midland Company (ADM), a global agricultural commodity processing company, from December 2010 to February 2012. Previously, he served as ADM’s Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer from March 2008 to December 2010. Mr. Mills joined ADM in 1979 and served in various senior accounting and treasury roles, including 12 years as Controller. He has been a director and a member of the audit committee of Black Hills Corporation, a diversified energy holding company, since October 2011. Mr. Mills also serves on the boards of Illinois College and Hickory Point Bank & Trust. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from Illinois College in Jacksonville, Illinois.
Jack D. Newman, Ph.D.Co-Founder and Chief Science OfficerJack Newman co-founded Amyris with over a decade of experience researching bacterial physiology and genetics. In addition to publishing in leading molecular biology and biotechnology journals, Dr. Newman co-authored the groundbreaking work underlying the technology of microbial terpene production. Dr. Newman received his doctorate from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in the field of microbial physiology and gene regulation, and a B.A. in molecular and cellular biology from the University of California, Berkeley.
Mark PatelSenior Vice President, Commercial OperationsMark Patel leads Amyris products strategy and sales growth. He joined Amyris in August 2010 and led corporate strategy and planning until before taking the lead in commercial operations. Prior to Amyris, Mr. Patel served as Partner at McKinsey & Company’s San Francisco office where he led both high tech and clean technology work. Mr. Patel holds both undergraduate masters degrees in Manufacturing Engineering from the University of Cambridge and an MBA at Stanford University.
Ramesh Raman, Ph.D.Senior Vice President, Global ManufacturingRamesh Raman leads Amyris manufacturing and supply chain operations. Dr. Raman has two decades of experience in supply chain operations. Prior to joining Amyris in 2007, he was in the supply chain practice at McKinsey & Company, focusing on the high tech and semiconductor industries. Previously, he worked at Mitsubishi Chemical implementing operational improvement programs in production and distribution operations for several divisions of the company in Japan including polymers and food chemicals. Dr. Raman has also worked in the strategic services froup at i2 Technologies, a leading supply chain enterprise software developer. Dr. Raman received his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in 1993 and his undergraduate degree, also in Chemical Engineering, from the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur. Christine Ring, Ph.D.Senior Vice President, Technology Strategy & LicensingChristine Ring leads Amyris legal technology strategy and intellectual property activities. Dr. Ring has served as Amyris’s Chief Intellectual Property Counsel since August 2006, and Senior Vice President, Technology Strategy & Licensing since January 2012. Prior to Amyris, she was the Director of Intellectual Property at Sunesis Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and was Senior Patent Attorney at Kosan Biosciences. Before becoming in-house counsel, she began her legal career in private practice, most recently as Senior Attorney at Pillsbury Madison & Sutro (now Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw & Pittman). Dr. Ring has a J.D. from Hastings College of the Law, a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Chemistry from University of California, San Francisco, and an A.B. in Biophysics from University of California, Berkeley.
Joel VelascoSenior Vice President, External RelationsJoel Velasco leads Amyris external communications and public policy. Mr. Velasco joined Amyris in January 2011 from the Brazilian Sugarcane Industry Association (UNICA) where, as Chief Representative in North America, he led UNICA’s efforts to expand international biofuel and sugar markets. Prior to joining UNICA, Mr. Velasco was Managing Director of Albright Stonebridge, an international strategic advisory firm based in Washington, D.C. and previously served as senior advisor to the U.S. Ambassador to Brazil and as a personal aide to Vice President Al Gore in the White House. Mr. Velasco received an M.A. from the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service, focusing his studies on the political economy of the Southern Cone, and a B.A. in Political Science from Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia.
